    Operating Millage Renewal Proposal

    This proposal will allow the school district to continue to levy the statutory rate of not to exceed 18 mills on all property, except principal residence and other property exempted by law, required for the school district to receive its revenue per pupil foundation allowance and renews millage that will expire with the 2024 tax levy.

    Shall the currently authorized millage rate limitation of 18 mills ($18.00 on each $1,000 of taxable valuation) on the amount of taxes which may be assessed against all property, except principal residence and other property exempted by law, in Lakeview School District, Calhoun County, Michigan, be renewed for a period of 6 years, 2025-2030, inclusive, to provide funds for operating purposes; the estimate of the revenue the school district will collect if the millage is approved and 18 mills are levied in 2025 is approximately $4,681,824 (this is a renewal of millage that will expire with the 2024 tax levy)?

    Lakeview School District Millage Renewal Vote Scheduled for August 6, 2024

    Battle Creek, MI - On Tuesday, August 6, 2024, voters will decide on the renewal of Lakeview School District’s non-homestead operating millage. The 18-mill levy, which is applied only to industrial and commercial properties and does not impact owner-occupied homes, makes up 10% of the district's state funding.

    All Michigan school districts must levy 18 mills on non-homestead property to receive full state funding. Without it, Lakeview faces an annual shortfall of $4.7 million. These funds are critical for covering day-to-day operational costs including instructional programming, classroom supplies, and staffing needs.

    Superintendent William Patterson, Ph.D., emphasized the importance of this funding, "The millage is crucial for maintaining our current educational programs. Without it, our state funding will be reduced below other districts, as the state does not compensate for the shortfall."

    This millage has been in existence since Proposal A went into effect in 1994. Lakeview voters have renewed every six years since. The most recent renewal was approved in 2018 and expires this year.

    Dr. Patterson said, “The Lakeview community has consistently shown tremendous support for its schools. We encourage our residents to continue this tradition by voting in the upcoming election.”
